It's Beautyberry season, y'all.
Every year when those gorgeous little purple berries show up, I have to make jelly. It's become one of my favorite little signs that fall is on the way. For some reason there is something relaxing about the process of doing it for me.
Beautyberry jelly has a really unique flavor. My daughter said it tastes a little like cranberries with a hint of vanilla. It's tart, sweet and absolutely delicious with Brie or other cheeses, especially on homemade bread or a good cracker.
I use the same recipe every year from Cosmopolitan Cornbread, and it has never let me down. She also has a great video that walks you through the entire process. She even explains how to pick them.
A few of my personal tips:
• I prefer Ball pectin, but Sure-Jell works great too.
• Pay attention to the amount of lemon juice. More lemon gives you a tangier jelly, while using less makes it sweeter. I tend to like mine somewhere in the middle.
• And please only pick beautyberries from your own yard or somewhere you have permission to pick. We don't need any beautyberry-related neighborhood drama.
So, go get your jars and start picking!
